101: Neurodiversity Affirming Care for Autism and ADHD
This interactive workshop blends PowerPoint instruction, small group activities, and video/audio excerpts to build participant understanding in neurodiversity affirming interventions through a lens of decolonization and collective liberation.
Goals:
(1) Understand the basics of neurodiversity affirming evaluation and therapy practice with ADHD and Autistic youth, adults, and families.
(2) Learn and practice the language of the neurodiversity paradigm and the social model of disability, and the impact of ableism on the therapeutic process in order to avoid inducing shame during interventions.
(3) Develop confidence in determining ideal medication choices for Autistic vs ADHD vs Autistic + ADHD clients through an understanding of how neurotype differences interact with comorbid psychiatric conditions.
(4) Develop skills in advocating for client support needs across institutional barriers in individual practice settings.
(5) Identify unconscious biases around gender, race, and ability in order to work more effectively with clients of all races, genders, and sexual orientations.
101: Neurodiversity Affirming Psychiatry
Similar to the 101 workshop above, but specifically for psychiatric and primary care providers, with an additional focus on medication options for autistic and ADHD youth and exploring how training within the medical model of care impacts our understanding of clients. We will consider strategies for un-learning this paradigm and shifting to a neurodiversity affirming approach
101: Medications for Child Mental Health: a Neurodiversity Affirming Approach
Targeted at therapists and other non-prescribers working in mental health. This workshop includes an overview of psychiatric medications commonly used with children, how these can be utilized within an ND Affirming model, and concrete guidance for therapists on discussing medication with clients and families while remaining within scope of practice.
101: Supporting Identity Development in Queer and Neurodivergent Youth
When transgender and nonbinary youth are supported in their gender identity and develop a positive association with this identity, suicide rates decline and mental health improves. Similarly, anxiety and depression rates are lower in autistic youth who view autism as a positive aspect of their identity. This workshop discusses the connection between identity and mental health, giving participants strategies to explore identity and foster reslience when working with gender expansive and neurodivergent youth.
201: ADHD Assessment and Evaluation Workshop–
Targeted at master’s level mental health providers working on developing a ND Affirming ADHD evaluation process in order to develop competency needed to provide ADHD diagnoses. When master’s level providers operate to the full extent of their scope of practice, they reduce barriers to care created by referrals to psychiatry or psychological testing.
201: Neurodiversity and Disability Justice: Decolonizing Care Work Targeted at healing providers of all backgrounds, this workshop focuses on the overlap between the neurodiversity paradigm, the Disability Justice movement, and how anti-racism and decolonization tie in to neurodiversity-affirming care. Participants will explore how unconscious ableism, racism, and transphobia play into our work with clients and develop action steps for addressing these biases in their work. 201: Neurodiversity Affirming Care: the Intersection Autism and Gender Identity Targeted at healing providers of all backgrounds with experience in gender affirming care or ND affirming care (or have attended a training on these topics). This workshop focuses on the high prevalence of autism in the trans/non-binary community, exploring reasons for this overlap, supporting positive identity development and resilience, and considerations for working with this population.
201: Autism and Gender Divergence: The Neuroqueer Experience
